   The SAND MAN Foundation restores and preserves the SAND MAN tugboat as a registered Historic Property and as a part of Puget Sound maritime history. The vessel's name resulted from its frequent use in towing barges filled with sand from a large gravel pit near Steilacoom, WA down to Olympia by it's original owner, Arthur J. Weston.

The 108 year old vessel is listed on The National Register of Historic Places (Vessels) and The Washington State Historic Register; it is listed as an Historic Site by the City of Olympia. The Foundation makes the boat available to the public as a free, floating museum and local historic landmark. It also makes the vessel available for civic events and duties as may be deemed appropriate by the Governing Board, and attends maritime events throughout the Puget Sound area.

All work on the boat is done by volunteers. Materials are donated or purchased using donated money.  If you have a desire to volunteer for this project -regardless of your level of expertise- please inquire on the boat.  We are always looking for volunteers to man the boat on the weekends or to help at work parties (and of course to help out on our trips around the Puget Sound area!)

In recognition of Robert Powell, the last private owner of Sand Man. Bob began restoration of the boat in the late 1980s and was instrumental in creating the Sand Man Foundation in 1997. The Foundation is indebted to the generosity and vison of Robert Powell.
